Pick a chew that is larger than your dog's mouth so it cannot be swallowed in one go. Small dogs and puppies: softer chews such as lamb ears, chicken necks or turkey feet. Big chewers: buffalo hide, braided rolls or tendons.

Many softer chews are suitable from about 4 months, when the milk teeth change. Start with short chewing sessions and always supervise.

Single-ingredient chews make it easy to avoid a specific animal. Horse, camel, goat and rabbit are often chosen for dogs allergic to beef or chicken. In doubt, consult your vet.
